Enterprise RAG Architecture: Chunking, Hybrid Search & Reranking
Move beyond naive RAG. Implement semantic chunking, reciprocal rank fusion (BM25 + Dense Embeddings), and Cohere/BGE cross-encoder reranking.
π― What You Will Be Able to Do
- β’Understand why naive vector search fails on enterprise tables, acronyms, and product IDs.
- β’Implement Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF) combining keyword and semantic scores.
- β’Deploy Cross-Encoder rerankers to maximize Precision@K.
π Knowledge Required Beforehand
- β’Vector embeddings
- β’Basic Python

Standard tutorials tell you:
- 1Split text into 500-token chunks.
- 2Embed with OpenAI/Voyage.
- 3Retrieve top-5 cosine similarity.
- 4Pass into LLM.
Why this fails in real companies:
- β’Product codes & SKUs: Cosine similarity fails on strings like
PART-X992-BvsPART-X992-C. BM25 exact match is required. - β’Complex tables: Splitting a table row-by-row loses header context.
- β’Lost in the Middle: LLMs pay disproportionate attention to the start and end of context windows, ignoring middle chunks.

Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF) Formula
Mathematical Formulation
RRF(d) = \sum_{m \in M} \frac{1}{k + r_m(d)}
Where k \approx 60, and r_m(d) is the document's rank in retrieval method m.

Interactive PracticeRelated FDE Interview Questions & Evaluation Expectations
When should you use a bi-encoder vs a cross-encoder in a production RAG system?
HardWhat Interviewers Expect:
β’Bi-encoders (embedding models) compute vector representations independently for query and document. They are computationally efficient for million-scale search using vector indexes (HNSW).
β’Cross-encoders process query and document simultaneously through full cross-attention layers. They are far more accurate at understanding nuanced semantic relationships but too computationally expensive for first-stage retrieval.
β’Production pattern: Use bi-encoder + BM25 to retrieve top 50-100 candidates, then pass to cross-encoder to re-score and select the final top 5-10 chunks.
